How to calculate a percentage ?

Partial value / total value × 100

Example of percentage calculations

Example 1: Price Reduction Suppose an item originally priced at $80 is on sale for $64. To calculate the percentage discount:

  • Partial value (sale price): $64
  • Total value (original price): $80
  • Percentage discount = (64 / 80) × 100 = 80%

The discount is therefore 80%.

Example 2: Success Rate Imagine a group of 30 students passed an exam out of 40. To find the success rate in percentage:

  • Partial value (number of students passed): 30
  • Total value (total number of students): 40
  • Success rate in percentage = (30 / 40) × 100 = 75%

The success rate is therefore 75%.

Example 3: Salary Increase Suppose an employee whose salary was $2000 per month receives a raise to $2200. To calculate the percentage increase:

  • Partial value (new salary): $2200
  • Total value (old salary): $2000
  • Percentage increase = (2200 / 2000) × 100 = 110%

The increase is therefore 10%.
